The Federal Reserve, the US central bank, lowered its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on Wednesday. The move comes as the US economy deals with sticky inflation, slowing jobs figures and a lack of official data because of the government shutdown. Stock markets reacted favourably to the news initially, but were then weighed down by concerns related to the tech sector.
