Several Ukrainian regions suffered power outages amid frigid winter weather on Tuesday after Russia carried out a massive attack with drones and missiles. The strikes killed at least three people, including a four-year-old child, according to officials. Follow our liveblog for the latest updates.

Russia and US discussed 'irritants' in relationship but key issues unresolved, Interfax reports

Russian Deputy ​Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov ⁠said on Tuesday that Russian and US diplomats had ​held talks ‍on removing "irritants" in relations between ​the two countries but ​the main issues remain unresolved,

Russian news agency Interfax reported.


Another round of such contacts is expected in ‍early spring 2026, Ryabkov added.


The ​two countries have been discussing ways to resolve ‌a series of disputes that have ‍affected the working of each other's embassies. The talks are separate from Russia-US negotiations over the ‍war in Ukraine.


Russian strike on Ukraine kills 4-year-old child, two other people, Zelensky says

A massive ​Russian strike ⁠on Ukraine killed at least three ​people, ‍including a four-year-old child, ​President Volodymyr Zelensky said.


"This ​Russian strike sends an extremely clear signal about Russia's priorities. An attack was carried ‍out essentially in the ​midst of negotiations aimed at ending this ‌war," he said in a post ‍on the Telegram messaging app.

‍Russia ​launched ⁠more than 600 drones and dozens of ​missiles ‍to ​strike Ukraine's energy sector in ​overnight attacks on Tuesday, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said.


She said ‍on the ​Telegram messaging app that energy facilities ‌in the west ‍of the country had suffered the most damage.

Russia hits Ukraine's energy sector with over 600 drones, dozens of missiles, Kyiv says

‍Russia ​launched ⁠more than 600 drones and dozens of ​missiles ‍to ​strike Ukraine's energy sector in ​overnight attacks on Tuesday, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said.


She said ‍on the ​Telegram messaging app that energy facilities ‌in the west ‍of the country had suffered the most damage.


Russian drone and missile attack cuts power across Ukraine

Several Ukrainian regions suffered power cuts in frigid winter weather, after Russia launched its latest deadly large-scale attack with drones and missiles, authorities said.


"Russia once again is attacking our energy infrastructure. As a result, emergency power outages have been introduced in a number of Ukrainian regions," the country's energy ministry said on Telegram.


Fires broke out in several regions as a result of the "massive missile and drone attack", Ukraine's power operator Ukrenergo said, as temperatures dipped towards freezing in most of the country.


 One person was killed in the western region of Khmelnytsky and another was killed in Kyiv, local authorities said.


Several people, including children, were wounded in a number of regions, according to local authorities.


Poland scrambles aircraft after Russia strikes Ukraine, Polish armed forces say

Polish ‍and allied ​aircraft were deployed early ⁠on Tuesday to ensure the safety of Polish airspace after ​Russia launched ‍airstrikes targeting western Ukraine near ​the border with Poland, ​the armed forces of the

NATO-member country said.


"Fighter jets were scrambled, and ground-based air-defence and radar reconnaissance systems were ‍put on heightened readiness," the ​operational command of the armed forces said in a post ‌on social media website X.


"These ‍measures are preventive in nature and are aimed at securing and protecting the airspace, especially in areas adjacent ‍to the threatened regions."


Ukraine's Zelensky says progress in US-led peace talks is 'quite solid'

Initial drafts of US proposals for a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia meet many of Kyiv's demands, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, although he suggested that neither side in the almost four-year war is likely to get everything it wants in talks on reaching a settlement. 


“Overall, it looks quite solid at this stage,” the Ukrainian leader said of recent talks with US officials who are trying to steer the neighboring countries toward compromises.


“There are some things we are probably not ready for, and I’m sure there are things the Russians are not ready for either,” Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv.

Russia launches air attack on Kyiv after latest peace talks end, Ukraine's military says

Russia launched an ⁠early morning air attack on Kyiv on Tuesday, Ukrainian military said, just days ​after a US-led ‍round of peace talks in Miami ​ended on Sunday.


"Air defence forces are ​working to eliminate the threat in the sky over the capital," the Kyiv military administration said on Telegram, urging residents to remain in shelters ‍until the all-clear is given.


Officials did not ​immediately report casualties or damage. The full-scale of the attack was not ‌immediately known.
